What’s In A Curl?
If you hadn’t known, Bounce brand has been known for being the salon that specializes in curls, texture and embracing and understanding your curls and waves. And while we absolutely still have a speciality and stylists that specialize in curls and cuts only, we have been expanding with the inclusion of stylists that specialize in other areas of hair.
But let’s talk a bit about where our roots began and curls. Jennessa, Bounce owner, was an international educator on curls, curl cutting and styling. She has been outspoken in the need for more information and education when it comes to hair texture and how different hair textures and styles are approached and a greater need to teach that a “one size fits all” approach to hair is less than ideal.
As a non-stylist, I never really knew there was a need for this difference. What I have learned is cutting curls straight and wet leads to an unknown. Because no two curls are going to bounce up, dry and sit the same. So cutting them all the same likely won’t lead to the intended final aesthetic. Product use, application and ingredients is also a big deal!
What is a Curly Cut?
If you have curls, your haircut may look a little different than a traditional straight hair cut. Your hair will be cut while it is curly and dry. This allows the stylist to cut individual curl sets to where they will need to be to create the shape and look you’re looking for. There is actual science and math that is behind what is done, but ultimately, your stylist will be creating your look based upon what you’re looking for as a final look. With curls, each one can have “a mind of it’s own” and if cut wet it is trickier to determine just how each specific curl will dry and “bounce up to”.
How is this done?
Our stylists will use our signature dry-cutting technique while your hair is dry, before we take you to the sink to cleanse and condition. To allow us to perform the service, give you the best shape and style results for your curly hair cut, we ask that you come in for your appointment with your hair detangled, dry, with as little to no product as you are comfortable with and left down. We ask that you arrive with your curls hanging loosely, without pulling curls back into a braid, ponytail bun or clips to avoid stretching your curls, as well as it to be completely dry. This allows the stylist to see your curls in their most natural state and where each curl tendril falls naturally.
Products
As a general rule, it’s best to avoid products with silicon, sulfates and parabens. When applying product to your hair, ideally you will do it while you’re in the shower, your hair is still wet, before gently towel drying. Gels, mousse, creams all can be applied in this manner.. When you condition your hair, brush through beginning at the bottom of the hair section and work your way upwards (starting top down can tighten any tangles rather than make them easier to get through). Once you’ve detangled your hair you can squish your hair in an upward motion (hearing that squish squish) then you can apply your product. Hair is most susceptible to damage when it’s wet so be kind to it. Gently squeeze the excess water from your hair in a terry cloth towel or even a t-shirt. Either letting your hair air dry all the way, air dry 50% and then diffusing the rest can yield great results.
