Hair Is Hair, Right? So You Can Do It All….
Let me start this off by saying I am not a hair stylist. I have a medical background in Veterinary Medicine and own my own Photography business. I left Vet Med and started working at Bounce in the fall of 2017 and am currently the salon manager here at Bounce.
I actually started my journey with Bounce as a client first! I came in for my birthday in August 2017 for my very first appointment. I had limp, bleached “curly” hair that I assumed I had forever ruined because of excessive heat use and bleaching, and Bounce was the place for curls. After my first appointment with Jennessa, salon owner, curl specialist and international educator, I was hooked. I also cried after seeing my hair at the end of my appointment and the curls I had! The next morning, after sleeping on it, I woke up looking Ahhh-mazing. Seriously it was insane.
After beginning my career journey here at Bounce, the level of hair knowledge that I’ve acquired first, is incredible, and second, is never ending. And for our team, learning is also never ending. I have watched them continue to learn all about new products, new techniques, new ideas through further education and from one another. It’s pretty awesome.
One thing that I’ve learned, through my own business ownership is that knowing how to do my craft, does not mean that I can or desire to do ALL of it. A photographer takes photos, and one who is amazing at weddings, doesn’t mean that they will also be amazing at posed newborn photos, or headshots, or birth photography and the list goes on. As I continued learning and improving my craft, my own business mentor and coach talked about specializing.
Like many professions, doing all things good or great is ok, but finding your niche and being amazing at that is really where you want to pay attention. Another example is a restaurant chef. A huge menu with 50 options is sometimes a great option for people who have a variety of taste, and the food is likely pretty good. But when you go somewhere that has 5 menu items, that chef has likely perfected each one and that food is likely going to be amazing and not just “good”.
I’ve learned during my journey here that hair stylists also fall into this category. Hair is hair, yes. And hair has no gender, but having a specialty, something you do GREAT, it really can be the boost your career and passion needs. I never would have really known if I hadn’t started my career here. I probably fell under the category, if you went to school for it, you should be able to do it all, or want to do it all.
Any stylist or assistant who talks to us about starting a career at Bounce, and in the beginning of their journey here, we talk about doing what they love. You don’t have to do ALL things hair, simply because you’re a hair stylist. You can, and should, find what you’re passionate about and LOVE doing, and perfect that and go with it.
We have stylists that specialize in curly/texture hair, cuts, blonding, balayage, lived in colour, brunettes, straight hair, short hair cuts and hand-tied extensions. And watching each stylist and their journey or further education, it’s pretty cool. One thing that even seasoned professionals take the opportunity to do is model calls. Occasionally a new product, new technique, new idea comes along and our team will occasionally do a model call appointment to try these out, further perfect the technique or just to open their creative eye.
Each team member and their specialty is listed out on our website under “team” and you can learn a little bit more about them when you click their links.
Our stylists Instagram pages are also a great place to have a look at their work, their passion and who they are as a stylist (don’t forget to go to the reels tab! This can be where you see even more of their personalities!). When you’re looking for a stylist, it’s always a great idea to gauge what their specialty is, so that you can get what you’re looking for and never assume that they can do what you’re looking for. We want each of our clients to walk in and out confident with what their stylist will do for them .
You can even take our Stylist Matchmaker Quiz to find your perfect stylist match for not only what your hair goals are but also your budget! It’s doesn’t take very long but can be helpful for you to find your match here at Bounce!
